Concervancy Western Pennsylvania, the organization that handles both the House of the waterfall and various educational programs, organized a contest for achieving permanent housing and park space rental housing to support various educational activities. The competition was won by Patka Architects of Vancouver, who proposed a series of underground house, buried in the hill slopes of Bear Run Nature Reserve, where is the famous home of Wright's. The contest theme must achieve optimal natural environment and the construction will not disturb the ecosystem. Patkau’s proposal was selected from a list of six firms because: “In its subtlety, it is provocative and it carries forward the discourse about architectural space. The main feature of the project is not its content, but elements that have managed to omit them."
